FROZEN PIPES

Winter is approaching!  Every winter, we get many urgent callouts to people who have woken up or returned home to find their house or flat flooded by a burst pipe.  Quite apart from the inconvenience and the cost of calling out a plumber late at night, damage to personal property can be costly and upsetting. Carpets, especially, very rarely dry without stains and musty smells after a flood and usually need replacing.

It makes sense to think ahead and plan what to do.  Know where your stopcock (main tap) is, so that you can turn off the water supply quickly.  Also, know where your main gas tap and electricity switches are.  If electrical appliances are getting wet, you will need to switch off at the mains.  Wet electrical items can cause electric shocks, or even start a fire.

Also, it makes sense to check that you have appropriate insurance for water damage to your property and any neighbours' that may be affected.
